Breckenridge skiAs you likely already know, Breckenridge is home to a wonderful ski resort, which opened up in December of 1961. Since then, the Breckenridge ski resort has become one of the Western Hemisphere’s most popular ski destinations. In the winter, it attracts millions of tourists to the Ten Mile Range’s east slopes. Obviously, the ski resort is the top economic driver in the entire region. At first, the ski resort only comprised of Peak 8. However, it slowly grew to encompass the terrain of Peaks 9 and 10 to the terrain of Peak 6.

Popular Events in Breckenridge, Colorado

Throughout the entirety of the year, Breckenridge hosts various public events. The International Snow Sculpture Championships are held every single January in Breckenridge. During this event, sculptors from all the countries of the world work to create art from blocks of snow that weight 20 tons.

Ullr Fest parade

The Ullr Fest parade, which is held annually in the winter, pays homage to Ullr, the Norse God of Snow. The Breckenridge Music Institute and the National Repertory Orchestra are both held in Breckenridge during the summer months. Expect to see a few art fairs come to town each summer. These art fairs tend to attract many buyers and artists, and are open to the public.

Summer Activities in Breckenridge

Some common summer activities are fly fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and road biking. Breckenridge has many trails for mountain biking, such as the Peaks Trail and the Flume Loops. The Peaks trail connects the town of Frisco with Breckenridge while the Flume Loops allows bikers to explore the Highlands Area. The Peaks trail is about 14 kilometers long and it parallels Highway 9. As you may have expected, the Peaks trail is a very popular ride.

Road bikers are also attracted by the great number of passes there are in Summit County. In the area, many running races and biking races are held during the summer. The Quandary Peak, which attracts many hikers, is nearby.

At the base of Peak 8, a fun park is operated during the summer months. The BreckConnect Gondola connects the park to the town, and parking here is free. History of Breckenridge CO

The town of Breckenridge was founded in 1869 in order to serve the miners who were working the gold deposits that had been discovered along the Blue River. Soon, hard rock mining joined the placer gold mining already taking place in Breckenridge. Thus, the mining industry, which would eventually produce 31 kilograms of gold, was born in this town.

Breckenridge PopulationAccording to the 2010 census, Breckenridge has a population of 4,540 people. Due to the many vacation homes in the area, this town also has a large population of part-time residents. The population density of this Colorado town is about 486 people per square mile.

The racial makeup of this town is rather homogenous, as about 95 percent of the population is white. Only one percent of the population is Asian, while the other three percent are African American, Native American, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic.
