Breckenridge ULLR FestivalThe Breckenridge Ullr Festival is celebrated every January in the resort ski town of Breckenridge, CO. The 2015 week-long event will be take place from January 11, 2015 – January 17, 2015. It is hosted by the Breckenridge Resort Chamber of Commerce. The 2015 event marks the 52th anniversary for the Ullr fest. The festival honors the god of winter (from Norse mythology), Ullr for giving the gift of snow. Ullr is said to be the one behind the most magnificent snow in the world being bestowed upon Breckenridge. During the winter event temperatures are usually around the upper twenties (Fahrenheit) or around -2 degrees Celsius. This festival began as Ullr Dag otherwise known as Ullr Day. Throughout the years Ullr has been honored some years with parties, skiing, balls, bonfires, parades, snow sculpting, Ullympics, dating games, and fake gold coins. Over time some traditions have died out while others have continued to exist. ULLR Fest now consists of parties, games, and fun in the snow.

Breckenridge ULLR FestivalLocals and visitors alike are known to don Viking hats during the Ullr fest. The week is filled with a variety of different activities. Some of the activities are free while others require an entry fee. It is a family-friendly festival with activities for children and adults as well. Children can enjoy in addition to indoor activities; ice skating, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and a bonfire. There is a day dedicated to Ullympic game activities such as the frying pan toss. Other activities are around winter sports such as the ski boot relay, the group ski racing, and the pond hockey tournament. There is and a fashion show as well as a ceremony to crown the Queen and King of Ullr. The festival’s highlight is the parade down Main Street. This is the event that attracts greatest number of spectators. There is no entrance free for the parade but it does require that parade floats be registered. Following the parade there will be a bonfire.
While the festival is family friendly, there are plenty of activities for those of the legal drinking age. Adults 21 and over can have fun at the local bars and restaurants. There is a world’s longest shot-ski contest participants can do with a group of friends. Everyone can have fun during this week long festival while enjoying the winter in Colorado. Ullr Fest has become a winter festival tradition that celebrates snow every year.
